Dumbbell Z Press
Also known as: Z-Press, Seated Floor Dumbbell Press
StrengthPushCore
Body Part: Shoulders
Description
The dumbbell Z press trains the shoulders and triceps while your trunk holds an unsupported seated position on the floor. Keep your legs straight and heels down, press both dumbbells from shoulder height to above your shoulders with a neutral grip, then lower them without leaning back.
How to Perform
- Sit on the floor with straight legs and heels down, holding a dumbbell at each shoulder with palms facing each other.
- Sit tall with your chest up and your ribs stacked over your hips. Brace your abdominal muscles and keep your legs straight, with your heels on the floor.
- Press both dumbbells overhead in a controlled motion. Keep your forearms close to vertical and avoid leaning your torso backward.
- Finish with the dumbbells over your shoulders and your elbows straight but not forcefully locked. Keep your head neutral and your ribs down.
- Lower the dumbbells slowly back to shoulder height while staying upright. Do not let your lower back round excessively or your torso rock backward.
- Repeat for the planned number of repetitions, using a weight that allows you to maintain a tall seated position throughout.

Tips
- Exhale through the hardest part of the upward movement.
- Choose a load that allows the same range on every repetition.
- Use two weights of equal mass to balance the load on both sides.
- Keep the palms facing each other as shown in the video.
- Press your heels gently into the floor to stabilize the seated base.
Common Mistakes
- Rounding the lower back instead of maintaining a tall, neutral seated posture.
- Leaning back to turn the press into an incline press.
- Starting with the dumbbells too far in front of the shoulders.
- Flaring the elbows straight out to the sides instead of keeping them slightly forward.
- Pressing the dumbbells forward rather than stacking them over the shoulders at the top.
- Using momentum or bouncing the dumbbells out of the bottom position.
