Also known as: Standing Side Crunch, Standing Elbow to Knee Side Crunch
CoreBalanceFunctional
Description
The standing oblique crunch brings one knee out to the side toward the elbow on that same side, shortening the waist. Keep the working arm raised with the elbow bent and the other hand on the hip, then return the foot to the floor under control while balancing on the support leg.
How to Perform
- Stand upright with your feet about hip-width apart.
- Raise the working arm with the elbow bent and place the other hand on your hip.
- Shift weight to the opposite leg and brace your abdomen.
- Lift the working knee out to the side and bend the torso toward it, bringing the same-side elbow and knee closer.
- Return the foot to the floor and straighten the torso under control.
- Complete the repetitions, then change sides.

Common Mistakes
- Leaning forward or backward instead of bending directly to the side
- Rounding the shoulders and collapsing the chest
- Lifting the knee without bringing the rib cage and hip toward each other
- Swinging the leg or torso to create momentum
- Rotating the torso instead of keeping the hips and shoulders mostly square
