Body Part: Shoulders

Description

Walk with one dumbbell held overhead on a straight arm and the free arm by your side. Keep the weight above the shoulder and take short steps while the torso stays upright. The carry trains shoulder stability and trunk control against the uneven load, with equal work for each arm.

How to Perform

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip width apart. Hold the dumbbell in one hand at shoulder level with your wrist straight.
  2. Press the dumbbell overhead until your elbow is fully straight. Keep the weight stacked above your shoulder, with your biceps close to your ear.
  3. Brace your core and keep your ribs down. Do not arch your lower back or lean away from the dumbbell.
  4. Walk forward with short, controlled steps, keeping your head neutral and eyes forward. Let the loaded shoulder stay active overhead.
  5. Walk for the planned distance or time, then lower the dumbbell carefully back to shoulder level before setting it down.
  6. Repeat on the other side, using the same distance or time for each arm.

Secondary Muscles:

Tips

  • Match the carry duration on the two arms.
  • Keep the wrist straight so the handle sits securely over the forearm.
  • Stand tall with your head neutral and look straight ahead, not up at the dumbbell or down at the floor.
  • Keep the free arm relaxed by your side or slightly out for balance, without swinging it excessively.
  • Breathe steadily while walking. Maintain abdominal tension without holding your breath for the entire carry.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the elbow bend instead of keeping the arm locked out overhead
  • Allowing the dumbbell to drift forward, behind the head, or out to the side
  • Arching the lower back and flaring the ribs to hold the weight overhead
  • Leaning the torso away from the loaded side instead of staying tall and stacked
  • Rotating or side-bending through the torso while walking
  • Taking long, uncontrolled steps that cause the weight to sway
