Workout logging

How SmartWorkout counts volume for dumbbell exercises

Short answer

Set volume (tonnage) is weight times reps. For exercises with two dumbbells and for single-arm or single-leg exercises, you log one side (the weight of one dumbbell and the reps of one arm or leg), and SmartWorkout counts the volume twice. Weight, estimated 1RM, reps and sets are not doubled.

What to log for each set

When each side of your body lifts its own weight, or the sides work one after the other, log the values for one side. For these exercises the app multiplies the set volume by 2, assuming the other side did the same.

  • Two dumbbells at once: the weight of one dumbbell, for example 30 kg, not 60 kg.
  • Single-arm or single-leg: the weight and reps of one side.
  • Alternating: the reps of one side, for example 10, not 20.

Examples

  • "Dumbbell Bench Press" with 30 kg dumbbells, 10 reps: log 30 kg and 10. Set volume: 30 kg × 2 × 10 = 600 kg.
  • "Dumbbell Bent Over Row", 20 kg, 12 reps per arm: log 20 kg and 12. Volume: 20 kg × 2 × 12 = 480 kg.
  • "Single-Leg Extension", 25 kg, 15 reps per leg: log 25 kg and 15. Volume: 25 kg × 2 × 15 = 750 kg.
  • "Dumbbell Goblet Squat": you hold one dumbbell with both hands, so you log its weight and the volume is not doubled.

What is not doubled

  • Set weight and the weight record: they stay at the weight you log, for example one dumbbell.
  • Estimated 1RM and its record: calculated from the weight and reps you log.
  • Rep totals in your statistics.
  • Sets per muscle group and volume zones (Premium): a single-arm set counts like any other set, not as two.

Where you see volume

The doubled volume shows up everywhere the app shows volume. Warm-up sets never count toward it.

  • Next to each set during a workout, when the metric column shows "Vol.".
  • In the summary after a workout ("Total Weight") and in the workout details in your history ("Volume").
  • On the exercise chart ("Volume").
  • In your statistics: Profile › Statistics ("Workout volume").

How to check if an exercise doubles volume

  1. During a workout, open the exercise menu and choose "Exercise Details".
  2. Look for the "Double Counted Volume" row below the muscle map. If it is there, the app doubles the volume for this exercise. Tap it to see an explanation.

The setting belongs to the exercise. It is fixed for exercises from the app's library, and you can change it for your own exercises.

Your own exercises

In your own exercises, doubling is turned on by the "Single Arm / Single Leg" switch, captioned "Counts weight twice in statistics". You'll find it on the "New Exercise" screen (search the exercise list for the name and tap "Add new Exercise" below the results) and behind "Edit Exercise" in the exercise details.

  • Choosing the "Dumbbell" weight type turns the switch on, and any other weight type turns it off. So set the switch after choosing the weight type.
  • Turn it on for two dumbbells and for single-arm and single-leg exercises.
  • Turn it off when you hold one dumbbell with both hands.
