Body Part: Chest

Description

The standing band chest press pushes two handles forward from chest height against a band anchored behind the body. Stand in a split stance and keep the trunk upright as the chest and triceps extend the arms, then bring the handles back toward the chest against the band's pull.

How to Perform

  1. Anchor the resistance band securely behind you at chest height, using a stable post or anchor point that will not move.
  2. Stand facing away from the anchor and hold one handle in each hand at chest level, with your elbows bent and slightly behind your torso.
  3. Step forward until the band has light tension, then place your feet about hip-width apart with one foot slightly in front for balance.
  4. Brace the abdomen and keep the torso upright while allowing the shoulder blades to move naturally during the press.
  5. Press both handles forward until your arms are straight in front of your chest, without locking your elbows hard or letting your shoulders rise.
  6. Slowly bend your elbows and return the handles to the starting position, controlling the band as it pulls back.

What Muscles Work

Primary Muscle:

Secondary Muscles:

Tips

  • Check the anchor with a gentle pull before taking your stance.
  • Start with a light band to learn its increasing resistance.
  • Step forward until there is a little tension at the start.
  • Exhale as you press and inhale on the return.
  • Change the leading foot between sets for a balanced stance.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the lower back arch or ribs flare instead of keeping the torso stacked.
  • Shrugging the shoulders toward the ears instead of keeping them down and stable.
  • Using a stance that is too narrow or unstable, causing the body to rock during the press.
  • Pressing with one arm faster or farther than the other, letting the torso rotate.
  • Stopping short of a comfortable full press or locking the elbows aggressively at the end range.
  • Letting the wrists bend back or sideways instead of keeping them aligned with the forearms.
