Atlas Stone Load
Also known as: Atlas Stones, Atlas Stone Lift
StrengthExplosiveFunctionalPull
Description
A strongman lift in which you pick a heavy round stone up from the floor, rest it on your lap in a deep squat, then stand up and load it onto a chest-high platform. The legs and hips do most of the work, while the back, arms and grip hold the stone tight to your body.
How to Perform
- Stand close behind the stone facing the platform, with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
- Bend your hips and knees, bring your chest over the stone and wrap your forearms and hands under its lower half.
- Pull the stone off the floor and roll it up onto your thighs, sitting into a deep squat.
- With the stone on your lap, move your hands higher around it and squeeze it tightly against your torso.
- Drive through your legs and stand up with the stone hugged high on your chest.
- Push your hips forward, lean back slightly and roll the stone over the edge onto the platform.
- Release the stone only when it rests securely on the platform.

Secondary Muscles:
Tips
- Start with a light stone and a lower platform while you learn the lap and the regrip.
- Take a fresh breath and brace again while the stone rests on your lap, before you stand up.
- Look forward rather than down as you stand up, so your chest stays up behind the stone.
- Tacky on your forearms improves the grip on the stone if your gym allows it.
- Finish close to the platform with your feet flat, so a slight lean back is enough to roll the stone over.
Common Mistakes
- Starting with the stone too far in front of your feet
- Trying to lift the stone from the floor to the platform in one pull without lapping it
- Curling the stone with the arms instead of driving with the legs and hips
- Leaving the hands low on the stone after the lap, so it slips as you stand
- Letting the stone drift away from your chest as you stand up
- Throwing the stone with a hard lean back instead of rolling it onto the platform with the hips
