Wrist Curl on Machine
StrengthPull
Body Part: Forearms
Description
Sit with your forearms supported on the machine pad and palms facing upward. Grip the handles with a supinated grip, keeping your wrists just beyond the edge of the pad. Lower the handles by extending your wrists under control, then curl them upward by flexing your wrists as far as comfortably possible. Keep your forearms and elbows still throughout the movement, using only the wrists. Avoid swinging, gripping excessively hard, or using a load that limits your range of motion.
How to Perform
- Adjust the machine so the wrist pad supports your forearms comfortably and the handle is within easy reach when your wrists are neutral.
- Sit facing the machine with your forearms resting fully on the pad, palms facing upward, and your wrists positioned just beyond the edge of the support.
- Grip the handle with an underhand grip, keeping your shoulders relaxed, elbows still, and forearms firmly against the pad.
- Allow the handle to roll slightly toward your fingers as you slowly extend your wrists downward, keeping control of the weight.
- Curl the handle upward by flexing your wrists and squeezing your forearm muscles, bringing your palms toward your forearms.
- Pause briefly at the top without lifting your forearms or using your elbows, then lower the handle slowly to repeat.
- Keep the movement isolated to your wrists throughout the set and use a light enough load to maintain a full, controlled range of motion.
What Muscles Work
Primary Muscle:
Tips
- Adjust the machine so the pivot point aligns with your wrists and your forearms are fully supported on the pad.
- Use an underhand grip with your palms facing up, keeping your wrists in a neutral, comfortable starting position.
- Keep your elbows and forearms still throughout the movement; only your wrists should move.
- Lower the handle slowly by allowing your wrists to extend, without forcing an uncomfortable stretch at the bottom.
- Curl the handle upward by flexing your wrists and squeezing your forearms, rather than lifting with your elbows or shoulders.
- Use a controlled tempo and avoid bouncing or using momentum, especially during the lowering phase.
- Choose a light to moderate load that allows full wrist movement and strict control, as the forearm muscles fatigue quickly.
- Exhale as you curl the handle up and inhale as you return it under control.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, tingling, or discomfort in the wrist or elbow, and reduce the range of motion or load if needed.
Common Mistakes
- Using the forearms instead of keeping them fully supported on the pad
- Bending or lifting the elbows to move the weight
- Turning the movement into a biceps curl by flexing the elbows
- Using a grip that is too wide or too narrow to control the handle
- Moving the wrists through only a short, partial range of motion
- Letting the wrists drop abruptly at the bottom instead of controlling the stretch
- Using momentum or bouncing the handle through the repetitions
- Extending the wrists excessively at the bottom and losing a stable grip
- Relaxing the fingers completely and allowing the handle to roll out of control
- Shrugging the shoulders or tensing the neck during the curl
- Using a load that forces rapid, jerky wrist movement
- Failing to fully squeeze the forearm flexors at the top of each repetition
