Description

Take a low athletic stance with your knees bent, hips back and feet apart. Shuffle sideways by stepping with the lead foot and bringing the other foot toward it without crossing. Travel back in the opposite direction, keeping your hips level and your chest facing forward.

How to Perform

  1. Stand tall with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly and shift into an athletic stance with your hips back and chest up.
  2. Keep your core braced, your back neutral, and your weight balanced over the middle of your feet.
  3. Step sideways with the lead foot in the direction you are moving. Do not cross your feet.
  4. Bring the trailing foot in toward the lead foot, returning to your starting stance width. Stay low throughout the movement.
  5. Continue taking controlled side steps for the planned distance or number of repetitions, keeping your knees tracking in line with your toes.
  6. Move back in the opposite direction by leading with the other foot. Keep your hips level, avoid bouncing up and down, and maintain control until you finish.

Tips

  • Use a clear, level surface that gives your shoes reliable traction.
  • Keep your core braced and your weight balanced through the middle of each foot, not on your toes only.
  • Take quick, controlled steps and keep your feet pointed mostly forward.
  • Use a shorter range and slower pace until you can maintain a stable knee and hip position.
  • If you are shuffling for conditioning, focus on clean movement first, then increase speed or distance.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing too tall instead of keeping a low athletic stance.
  • Crossing the feet instead of using short side steps.
  • Letting the knees collapse inward during the shuffle.
  • Allowing the hips to rise and fall with each step.
  • Pushing off only with the leading foot instead of driving from the trailing leg.
  • Turning the torso and hips instead of keeping the body facing forward.
