Body Part: Shoulders

Description

Lie on your side with your upper arm resting against your torso and your elbow bent at 90 degrees. Keep your elbow fixed and rotate your forearm upward, lifting the dumbbell or resistance band away from your body while maintaining control. This exercise targets the rotator cuff muscles, particularly the infraspinatus and teres minor, helping to improve shoulder stability and external rotation strength. Perform slowly and with proper form to avoid shoulder strain.

How to Perform

  1. Lie on your side with the arm you want to exercise on top and bent at a 90-degree angle at the elbow, resting against your side.
  2. Keep your elbow tucked close to your body throughout the movement to isolate the shoulder muscles.
  3. Hold a lightweight dumbbell or resistance band in your top hand, allowing your forearm to rest across your abdomen.
  4. Slowly rotate your forearm upward, lifting the dumbbell or band away from your body while keeping your elbow fixed in place.
  5. Raise your forearm until it is approximately perpendicular to your torso or as far as comfortable without pain.
  6. Pause briefly at the top of the movement to maximize muscle engagement.
  7. Slowly lower your forearm back to the starting position with control, avoiding any sudden movements.
  8. Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, maintaining proper form throughout.
  9. Switch sides and repeat the exercise with the other arm to ensure balanced shoulder strength.

What Muscles Work

Primary Muscle:

Tips

  • Keep your elbow bent at a 90-degree angle and tucked close to your side throughout the movement.
  • Use a light dumbbell or resistance band to avoid straining your shoulder muscles.
  • Slowly rotate your forearm upward while keeping your upper arm stationary and pressed against your side.
  • Focus on controlled, smooth movements rather than speed to maximize muscle engagement and reduce injury risk.
  • Maintain a neutral spine and avoid twisting your torso during the exercise.
  • Pause briefly at the top of the movement to enhance muscle activation before lowering your arm back down.
  • Breathe steadily, exhaling as you lift the weight and inhaling as you lower it.
  • Perform the exercise on both sides to maintain balanced shoulder strength and stability.

Common Mistakes

  • Allowing the elbow to drift away from the body, reducing shoulder stabilization.
  • Using momentum or swinging the arm instead of controlled rotation.
  • Raising the shoulder off the floor, compromising proper alignment.
  • Rotating the arm beyond a comfortable range, causing shoulder strain.
  • Not maintaining a 90-degree bend at the elbow throughout the movement.
  • Engaging the trapezius muscles excessively instead of the rotator cuff.
  • Performing the movement too quickly, leading to poor muscle activation.
  • Neglecting to keep the wrist in a neutral position, causing undue stress.
