Body Part: Legs

Description

The Glute-Ham Raise 1/2 is a strength exercise targeting the posterior chain, specifically the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back. It involves lowering the body from a kneeling position to a horizontal position and returning halfway up, focusing on eccentric control and muscle activation.

How to Perform

  1. Begin by securing your feet under the footplate of a glute-ham developer (GHD) machine, with your knees resting on the pad.
  2. Ensure your body is straight from head to knees, with your hands crossed over your chest or placed behind your head.
  3. Engage your core and glutes as you slowly lower your torso forward by extending at the knees, keeping your back straight.
  4. Lower your body until it is parallel to the ground or slightly below, maintaining tension in the hamstrings.
  5. Pause briefly at the bottom position to maximize muscle engagement.
  6. Initiate the upward movement by contracting your hamstrings and glutes, raising your body halfway back to the starting position.
  7. Hold this halfway position for a moment before repeating the lowering phase.

What Muscles Work

Secondary Muscles:

Tips

  • Focus on controlled movements to maximize muscle activation and prevent injury.
  • Keep your core engaged throughout the exercise to maintain proper alignment and support.
  • Avoid using momentum; instead, rely on muscle contraction to perform each repetition.
  • Start with a limited range of motion if you're new to this exercise and gradually increase as you build strength.
  • Ensure that the GHD machine is adjusted correctly for your height to provide optimal support and leverage.

Common Mistakes

  • Starting with hips too far back, reducing hamstring engagement.
  • Allowing the hips to sag, causing lower back strain.
  • Using momentum to rise instead of controlled muscle contraction.
  • Failing to keep the core engaged, leading to instability.
  • Rising too high, placing undue stress on the knees.
  • Not aligning the knees properly with the pad, causing discomfort.
  • Neglecting to maintain a straight line from head to knees.
  • Rushing the eccentric phase, diminishing muscle activation.
  • Incorrect foot placement on the footplate, affecting leverage.
