Import a plan from a chat, your notes or your coach

Short answer

In SmartWorkout, you paste a plan as plain text: a ChatGPT answer, a note, a plan from your coach or the contents of a CSV file, up to 100,000 characters. AI brings over the days, exercises, sets, rest and tempo and matches the exercises to the library, then the app opens a preview you can edit. Importing costs 10 AI credits.

How to import a plan

  1. Copy the plan as text: a chat answer, a note, a message from your coach or the contents of a CSV file.
  2. On the Workout tab, next to "My Plans", tap "See All".
  3. Tap "+" and choose "Import plan".
  4. Paste the text and tap "Create plan".
  5. If the app couldn't match an exercise, pick one of the suggestions or "Choose another exercise", then tap "Open editable preview".
  6. Check the plan in the preview, change anything you want and tap "Save".

From version 5.2, you'll find import under Workout › Plans › "Import plan".

What AI brings over from the text

AI copies the plan exactly as written. It doesn't fix or add anything: if the text has no rest times or RIR, the plan won't have them either.

  • Blocks, weeks and workout days.
  • Exercises with their sets and reps, including rep ranges such as 8-12.
  • Rest times and tempo, such as 3010.
  • RIR, RPE or a percentage of your one-rep max (%1RM).
  • Warm-up sets, drop sets and exercises you alternate between, such as supersets.
  • Exercise names, matched to the app's library. They don't have to be identical, and when a match is uncertain, you pick the right exercise yourself.

The format AI reads most reliably

You don't need a special format, because AI reads plain text. It reads the format from the hint on the import screen most reliably, though: one exercise per line.

If you're putting the plan together in a chat, add this to your request: "Write the plan in this format: DAY: day name, then each exercise on its own line: - exercise name | sets x reps | REST rest in seconds. Put supersets and other exercises done in rotation between LINKED: and END LINKED."

  • "DAY: Upper" starts a new workout day.
  • "- Barbell Bench Press | 4x8 | REST 120" means 4 sets of 8 reps with 120 seconds of rest.
  • "3x8-12 RIR 2" means 3 sets of 8-12 reps with 2 reps in reserve. Instead of RIR, you can use RPE, such as "RPE 8", or a percentage of your one-rep max, such as "75% 1RM".
  • "TEMPO 3010" sets the tempo for the exercise.
  • You do the exercises between "LINKED:" and "END LINKED" in rotation. Write "REST 0" for each one except the last, and give the last one the rest after the whole round.

Stick to one scale per plan: RIR, RPE or %1RM.

What you can change after importing

The preview is the same plan builder you use to create a plan from scratch. You can change exercises, sets, reps, rest and tempo there. If the chat wrote one week and your plan should run longer, copy that week to the following ones. After saving, you edit the plan like any other.

Cost and limits

  • Importing costs 10 AI credits. Your starter credits are enough, and you don't need a subscription.
  • Credits are charged for reading the text, even if you don't save the plan afterwards. If the app shows "Could not import plan", no credits are taken.
  • The text can be up to 100,000 characters long.
  • A plan can have up to 8 blocks, 52 weeks per block, 14 workouts per week, 40 exercises per workout and 30 sets per exercise.
  • The app doesn't read files or photos, only pasted text.

A plan from your coach

If your coach sent the plan in a message or a file, copy it as text and paste it the same way. If your coach works with you in SmartWorkout, they assign the plan to you directly and you'll see it in the app without importing.

Workouts from another app

Moving your history is a separate feature: when you first open the app, you paste up to 10 recent workouts, once per account.
